Cade Cunningham takes charge with move after wasted 60-win season

The 2025-26 season came to a disappointing end for the Detroit Pistons when they were eliminated in embarrassing fashion at home in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The postseason loss washed away the good feeling from the Pistons’ first 60-win season in 20 years. But the team is getting an early start on the upcoming season as Pistons’ star guard Cade Cunningham has organized a player mini-camp this upcoming week, as per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

The Pistons’ mini-camp spear-headed by Cade Cunningham is set to be held in San Diego and will give the players an opportunity to get in some initial work before training camp begins in a little over one month. There’s no word, however, if Jalen Duren will be among the players taking part in the workout. Duren is still without a contract for next season amid negotiations with the Pistons.

But for Cunningham, this is an opportunity for him to continue to establish himself as the Pistons’ franchise player and a potential MVP candidate in his own right. The former No. 1 overall pick certainly had a compelling case this past season.

The rising young guard appeared in 64 games at a little over 33 minutes per game. He averaged 23.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 9.9 assists and 1.4 steals with splits of 46.1 percent shooting from the field, 34.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 81.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Cunningham has played his entire career with the Pistons to this point, and he will be entering his sixth season in the NBA while coming off his second consecutive All-Star appearance.
