Why Dirk Nowitzki’s shot doctor is working with Luka Doncic in Slovenia

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in Slovenia for a team-bonding activity hosted by Luka Doncic, but amongst the recreation, the team got in on-court work in anticipation of the 2026-27 season. During a recent workout, Dallas Mavericks fans no doubt caught a glimpse of Holger Geschwinder, the former shooting coach for Dirk Nowitzki, observing the workout from the arena stands.

As it turns out, the guru who got Dirk Nowitzki’s shot right actually works closely with Luka Doncic through the Lakers star’s Total Hoops Approach youth initiative via The Search Institute, as per longtime NBA insider Mark Stein.

While the image probably tugs at Mavericks fans’ heartstrings, it appears as if the presence of Geschwinder is a little more mundane than the potential assumption that he’s now working with Doncic in terms of refining his jumper.

When it comes to the Lakers, fans are no doubt anticipating a big year from the six-time All-Star following his recovery from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the entirety of the team’s playoff run last season.

Doncic was enjoying a career year while firmly putting his name in the MVP conversation as the Lakers had climbed the Western Conference standings right before the injury.

He appeared in a total of 64 games at a little over 35 minutes per game. The eight-year veteran was leading the league in scoring at 33.5 points, the second-highest mark of his career. He was also averaging 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 47.6 percent from the field, 36.6 percent from the 3-point line and 78 percent from the free-throw line.
