Aakash Chopra has identified a recurring pattern in Yashasvi Jaiswal's recent batting performances, noting that the young opener has struggled to convert promising starts into substantial innings. Chopra observed that while Jaiswal has shown the ability to get set at the crease, he has not been able to build on these foundations to score the big knocks that would elevate his overall performance in the ongoing Test series.

Jaiswal, aged 24, has been a key member of India's Test batting lineup. Chopra recalled that Jaiswal had scored a 175-run knock against the West Indies in Delhi but emphasised that such significant contributions have been few and far between in his recent outings.

"Yashasvi Jaiswal had gotten set, and this is happening with Yashasvi consistently. The big knock is not coming. A 175-run knock had come. I think that was against the West Indies in Delhi, but he hasn't scored many runs around that," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

What Jaiswal needs to do next

The cricketer-turned-commentator further elaborated on the nature of Jaiswal's struggle, explaining that the issue lies not in his ability to start an innings but in his capacity to sustain and build on those starts. The former India batter stressed that converting starts into substantial scores is essential for a player of Jaiswal's calibre and potential. This pattern of getting set without going on to make big scores has become a concern for the team and observers alike.

"He has gotten starts many times, but he has not been able to make his starts big. This has been a constant problem with Yashasvi. I have said problem, but maybe it is not a problem yet. However, you want a big innings. Given the appetite the kid has, a big hundred is required to get the wagon on track again," Chopra said.

Chopra emphasised that Jaiswal possesses the hunger and talent required to turn his form around but needs to deliver a significant innings to regain momentum. The commentary and analysis from Chopra underscores the expectations placed on young Indian openers to contribute substantially in Test cricket.
