Mariners’ Brendan Donovan hits concussion IL after batting cage incident

The Seattle Mariners took a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Randy Arozarena hit a walk-off home run to win the game for the Mariners after he had already robbed a home run in the field during Kade Anderson’s MLB debut

Prior to the game, Brendan Donovan was injured in the batting cage. Now, he will be out of the lineup and on the IL, per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.

“Brendan Donovan is indeed heading to the 7-day concussion IL after last night’s incident in the batting cage. Patrick Wisdom, who is here at T-Mobile Park, is being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma as the corresponding move,” Kramer posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Donovan was initially in the starting lineup and set to play third base on Saturday. He was hit in the head by a baseball in the batting cages, leading to his being scratched.

Donovan has played in just 39 games this year, hitting .277 with a .371 on base percetnage. He also has three home runs and 15 RBIs. Patrick Wisdom will be rejoining the MLB roster. He has played in just 15 games this year, with a .122 batting average and a .182 on-base percentage. He also has just one home run and four RBIs.

The Mariners are now 62-68 on the season, which places them in third in the AL West, but just three games behind the Houston Astros for the division lead. The team is also two games behind the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Guardians for the final wild card spot in the American League. They finish their series with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.
