Riley Leonard stinking it up has Colts insider making Anthony Richardson trade declaration
On Saturday afternoon, the Indianapolis Colts continued their preseason slate with an ugly 34-6 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Quarterback Riley Leonard struggled mightily in this one, completing just 7 of his 14 pass attempts for 62 yards and a QB rating of 62.2.
Anthony Richardson didn’t exactly shine either, completing just 3 of 9 pass attempts for 24 yards and taking two sacks, but recently, James Boyd of The Athletic spoke on why Saturday’s performance was more of an indictment of Leonard.
“My takeaway from today: The #Colts can’t afford to trade Anthony Richardson Sr., not after that performance from Riley Leonard. To be clear, neither QB played well. But Leonard still hasn’t done enough this summer to justify shipping Richardson away,” noted Boyd on X, formerly Twitter.
Trade rumors have been swirling around Richardson, the Colts’ former first-round pick, ever since it was announced that Daniel Jones would be the team’s starting quarterback last year, with some wondering if another team might be willing to take a chance on the former Florida Gators quarterback as a franchis building block.
The fact that Jones and the Colts raced off to a historic offensive start last year only furthered that chatter, but as Boyd noted, Leonard has been shaky at best this preseason, and cutting ties with Richardson now would risk leaving the Colts without a reliable backup QB for the upcoming season.
The fact that Jones is coming off a devastating Achilles injury and is theoretically a bigger injury risk now would only enhance that pressure.
In any case, the Colts clearly have a lot to sort out in the quarterback room before the new NFL season gets underway.
