Cubs would normally love seeing Cardinals choke, but now Phillies are breathing down neck

The Chicago Cubs have been a dominant team on the road this season, winning nine straight series away from Wrigley Field — at least before they traveled to Seattle to take on the struggling Mariners. Even though Alex Bregman slugged three home runs, the Cubs lost the first two games of the series. This has had an impact on their position as the top Wild Card team in the National League.

The Cubs are trying to hold off the streaking Philadelphia Phillies. That team defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 and capped off the 3-game series sweep. The Phillies have won 9 games in a row and they are just 1.5 games behind the Cubs for the top spot in the Wild Card standings.

There is a huge difference between the top two spots. The No. 1 Wild Card team will face the No. 2 Wild Card team in the first round of the playoffs. All the games will be held at the top seed’s home park.

Normally, the Cubs would be thrilled to see the archrival Cardinals get swept. The Cardinals recently won 2 of 3 games from the Cubs at Wrigley Field. However, instead of celebrating a St. Louis defeat, Chicago was rooting for the Redbirds to get the best of charging Philadelphia.

Former Cub Kyle Schwarber once again did the damage for the Phillies. He blasted his 39th home run and drove in two runs. The Cardinals had built a 4-0 lead but that was just a small impediment for the hottest team in baseball.

The Cubs are hoping to salvage the finale of their series with the Mariners. Their road trip will continue with three challenging games in desert against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
