Steelers insider makes 4-QB projection even after Will Howard’s preseason dud

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently working with four quarterbacks, including veteran Aaron Rodgers. A team insider is predicting that Pittsburgh will keep those four play callers on the roster in the weeks ahead.

“Mason Rudolph seemingly solidified his spot as QB2 without playing a snap as Will Howard struggled, and rookie Drew Allar failed to replicate his explosive preseason debut. Unless the Steelers try to sneak Howard through on the practice squad, it seems more and more likely that they’ll keep four quarterbacks, and that would mean numbers have to be reduced somewhere else on the roster,” ESPN’s Brooke Pryor wrote.

This is interesting news, as Howard struggled in a recent preseason game against the New York Jets. Howard tossed two interceptions, as the Steelers ended up bowing to the Jets.

Pittsburgh is looking for a long-term solution at quarterback, as Rodgers has committed to playing just one more season in the NFL. The future in the long run could rest on Howard’s shoulders, or Steelers rookie Drew Allar. Time will tell what the Steelers decide to do at the quarterback position after this upcoming season.

For now at least, Pryor thinks the Steelers will look to other areas for roster cuts.

“Two potential groups to watch are the offensive linemen and safeties because of the position flexibility of veterans such as Brock Hoffman and Jalen Ramsey,” she wrote.

The Steelers have a new head coach this season in Mike McCarthy. McCarthy took over from Mike Tomlin, who stepped down following the 2025 NFL season.

McCarthy saw a lot of room for improvement after his team lost to the Jets.

“We will have great ‘teaching film,’” McCarthy said of his team’s effort, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, “and we’re a staff that loves to teach.

“I wish we would have been more productive today, but this is definitely an opportunity to grow.”

The Steelers play a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday.
