49ers’ George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey practice returns spark ‘best practice of training camp’

With the San Francisco 49ers preparing for Week 1 of the regular season, which will be against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on Sept. 10, the team has been awaiting the practice return of stars George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. As Kittle and McCaffrey came back to 49ers practice on Sunday, it led to what one reporter called the best practice session in training camp.

This statement came from David Lombardi, who took to social media to say that Sunday was. the best “practice of training camp,” saying that there was intensity in every aspect, and how Kittle and McCaffrey “fueled it.”

“Best 49ers’ practice of training camp and effectively the last one since we almost certainly won’t see 1-on-1s anymore and Tuesday’s session will be well into ‘dress rehearsal’ week,” Lombardi wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “But true intensity both ways — Kittle and CMC returns fueled it — with big plays and yelling back and forth.”

In terms of the usage of both stars, the star tight end didn’t take part in team drills, but the running back did, according to Jennifer Lee Chan.

“Very spirited 49ers practice on Sunday,” Lee Chan wrote. “While George Kittle did not participate in team drills, Christian McCaffrey did.”

More on the “entertaining” 49ers practice.

Another reporter, Cam Inman, would note that the practice was “entertaining,” citing the biggest highlights of the session, like quarterback Brock Purdy taunting linebacker Fred Warner after a play.

“Entertaining 49ers practice: *McCaffrey 4 carries (3 in 5-snap span),” Inman wrote. “*Purdy taunts Warner after completion to Deebo…*Warner earlier clobbered Black on PBU…*Mike Evans left, seems precautionary again…*[De’Zhaun] Stribling, [Deommodore] Lenoir no-contact participants…*[Upton] Stout INT BP…*No [Nick] Bosa, Height.”

While Kittle has been progressing after tearing his Achilles in January, McCaffrey has been dealing with leg tightness, as he cited feeling “great,” according to Nick Wagoner.

“[McCaffrey] said he ‘felt great’ being back out…Added he ‘loves where we’re at,'” Wagoner wrote.

It remains to be seen when both Kittle and McCaffrey will come back fully and be ready for San Francisco when it opens the season on Sept. 10 against the Rams.
