Packers face major decision at RB amid wait for Josh Jacobs punishment
The Green Bay Packers are still waiting on word of any NFL punishment after Josh Jacobs’ offseason arrest. That decision will play a major role in how the franchise builds their 2026 running back room.
The Packers could end up carrying four running backs on their 53-man roster. Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd seem like locks while Chris Books has shined on third downs. With Pierre Strong’s effort on special teams, Green Bay may opt keeping all four is in best interest of the organization, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
“Even if Josh Jacobs’ legal issues don’t lead to a suspension by the NFL, the Packers might want to keep four running backs because Pierre Strong Jr. could be their best option as a kickoff returner,” Demovsky wrote. “He ripped off a 68-yard return in the first half and showed he can handle some carries, too.”
“He rushed for 37 yards on eight carries (a 4.6-yard average), including gains of 12 and 7 yards on consecutive plays,” he continued. “Behind Jacobs, the Packers will keep MarShawn Lloyd, and they like Chris Brooks as a third-down back because of his pass blocking. If Jacobs gets formally charged and/or suspended before the opener, they will almost certainly keep Strong.
Should Jacobs be dealt a suspension, Strong becomes much more of a lock to make the roster, as Demovsky noted. But the Packers want play makers all over the gridiron. With what Strong could do on special teams, and his role as a potentially crucial depth, his odds are already on the favorable side.
When it comes to leading the run game, Lloyd seems next in line if Jacobs is forced to miss any time. However, he has just six carries for 15 yards at the NFL level. The Packers want to ensure they have proper depth in place at running back.
Jacobs’ scenario will be a dark cloud over Green Bay’s running back situation until a resolution is made. In the meantime, the Packers may be stacking their deck at the position.
