Browns’ Todd Monken is either priming fans for unpopular Deshaun Watson decision or he’s full of BS

The Cleveland Browns will know in the next 24 hours who their starting quarterback will be, as head coach Todd Monken noted that he’ll make a decision at the start of the week. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders have put enough game on film for Monken to make a decision, and it may come down to what they did in the second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

It was a solid day for Sanders, who was able to finish with a touchdown, but it wasn’t the best showing for Watson. His performance left fans at the stadium booing him, and after the game, he shared that he thought it was disrespectful.

The next day, Monken was asked how he felt about Watson’s comments, and he also noted that he had a conversation with the quarterback.

“I’ll keep those conversations private, but I think Deshaun spoke from the heart. We all want to play well as a team and individually. There’s no question we’re all frustrated. I certainly could’ve coached better and we could’ve played better,” Monken said via Scott Petrak of the Chronicle Telegram.

“Browns coach Todd Monken on Deshaun Watson’s postgame comments: The moment got to him. He emptied his heart a little bit. I don’t think that says who he is,” Petrak wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

It was an emotion-filled postgame for Watson, and he even brought up the time he tore his Achilles and the fans cheered.

“It has nothing to do with the performance. It’s a little bit [more] personal than that. It’s a disrespectful thing.” Watson said after the game. “The last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles. And that same fan base cheered when I got hurt.”

Monken said that Watson’s postgame comments wouldn’t affect his decision, and it’ll be interesting to see who decides to choose as the starter.
