Yankees rookie George Lombard Jr. really needs to clean up act after yet another gaffe
The George Lombard Jr. era with the New York Yankees is nearly three weeks in. Lombard started his Yankees career strong, playing fantastic defense and hitting two home runs in his first five games.
Now, Lombard is having some issues in the field, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
“George Lombard Jr. has committed 3 errors in his last 3 games. That one was a double play ball. Instead, Blue Jays have bases loaded, 1 out,” Hoch posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The Lombard error came with one out in the top of the fourth. There were runners on first and second at the time, and the ball could have been a double play. Instead of an inning-ending double play, the bases were loaded. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly, leading to a run. The run would tie the game at two. The Yankees would add three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Lombard would end up going two for four in the game and scoring two runs.
Lombard came into the game hitting .273 with a .339 on-base percentage. He has two home runs and five RBIs so far. He also has four errors and a 0.9 Defensive WAR.
The Yanks came away with an 8-3 win over the Blue Jays. The Yankees are now 74-56, which places them in second place in the AL East and three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the division. They also have control of the top wild-card spot in the American League. They begin a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Tuesday.
