Braves manager Walt Weiss drops Bryce Elder truth bomb amid bounce back season
The Atlanta Braves did not get the start they wanted from Bryce Elder on Wednesday, but manager Walt Weiss made clear that one difficult outing will not define the right-hander’s bounce-back season.
The Braves entered their series finale vs. the Boston Red Sox in first place in the National League East and with one of baseball’s strongest records. The right-hander took the mound at Fenway Park with a 1.97 ERA, having helped keep Atlanta’s rotation steady through the first two months.
The night did not follow that script. The 2023 MLB All-Star allowed six runs over 3.1 innings in an 8-0 loss, surrendering nine hits as Boston took control early. Still, the result did little to erase the work Elder has put together during a season that has marked a clear turnaround from previous inconsistencies.
Before the game, MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM shared audio on its X, formerly Twitter, of the Braves manager discussing the value of the 27-year-old to the rotation.
“He’s the real deal.”

Weiss shortly went on to add:
“Has been a huge lift to this rotation, him doing what he’s doing.”
The remarks reflected the Braves’ broader view of Elder’s season, not the result of one start. Weiss, now in his first season as manager, has previously discussed the mechanical changes and adjustments that helped Elder regain his form, and Atlanta has benefited from his ability to provide reliable innings in a deeper rotation.
For the Braves, the next test will be how quickly the right-handed pitcher can move past his dreadful Fenway outing Wednesday afternoon. Elder has built his 2026 season on consistency, command, and a sharper approach, giving Atlanta a reason to view the outing as an interruption rather than a reversal. As the Braves continue their push in the National League, they will need Elder to rebound and keep the rotation positioned for another postseason run.
