The 76ers hired the veteran tactician as an assistant coach, adding one of the league’s most respected player development voices to Nick Nurse’s staff. The move also brings him back together with two familiar faces in Nurse and LeBron James.

Handy previously worked alongside Nurse during the Toronto Raptors’ championship-winning 2018-19 season. His connection with James stretches even further back, as the two have worked together during James’ time with both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.

Those relationships could make his transition to Philadelphia a smoother one, but his value extends far beyond familiarity.

Handy brings a wealth of experience to Philadelphia after spending more than a decade coaching in the NBA. He began his journey with the Los Angeles Lakers as a player development coach before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he worked his way into an assistant coaching role and was part of the franchise’s 2016 championship run.

From there, Handy joined the Toronto Raptors, helping the franchise capture its first NBA championship in 2019. He then returned to the Lakers, where he added another ring to his resume as part of the team’s 2020 championship-winning staff and the inaugural NBA Cup in 2023.

Most recently, Handy spent time with the Dallas Mavericks before making the move to Philadelphia. The 55-year-old tactician has built a reputation as one of the league’s most respected player development voices while working alongside some of the NBA’s biggest stars.

Now, Handy will get the chance to bring his experience to one of the NBA’s most intriguing situations. With a new season ahead and familiar faces surrounding him, he is clearly embracing what comes next.
