‘My fuse is shorter’ – Rory McIlroy outlines break from golf plans

Rory McIlroy has admitted that he never wants to play four consecutive events in a row and that his ‘fuse’ is shorter than it used to be.

The two-time Masters winner is currently competing in the Tour Championship as part of the FedEx Play-Offs.

Because it is the play-offs, the Northern Irishman has had to compete in a few tournaments without much break at all.

The FedEx Cup is a competition that McIlroy has enjoyed great success in.

He has won this particular competition three times across his career with points racked up over the PGA Tour season and with more available in the play-off events.

However, ahead of the final round, in an interview with media, he admitted that this is his limit in terms of number of consecutive events.

He said: “I think once you lose your enthusiasm to go to the course, it is time to take a break. I’ve turned up to events that I haven’t necessarily wanted to be there because I feel like I should be there.

“If I show up at a tournament, I want to perform at my best and play my best, and there has been times when I haven’t done that, and it’s frustrating to me.

“But at the same time, no one wants to see me go through the motions.

“This is my third week in a row. I rarely do that anymore, and I feel like that is my limit. If I had to tee up again next week, that to me is tough.

“I think the last time I played four in a row might have been in 2024, and in the fourth week, I was done.

“I am never doing that again. But again, I am 37. This is my 18th or 19th year as a professional, so my fuse is a little shorter than it used to be.”

Rory McIlroy’s legacy

Ever since finally getting that monkey off his back and winning The Masters and donning the famous green jacket in 2025, McIlroy has taken a much more relaxed stance to his career.

The 37-year-old will go down as one of the best to ever play the game and has won all of the big tournaments, including multiple Ryder Cups.

There really isn’t too much more for him to achieve in the sport.

He has openly admitted that his legacy doesn’t really concern him, while earlier this year, he skipped several PGA Tour Signature Events due to concerns over the schedule.

As a result, he has been able to spend more time with his family.

It is something he has been criticised for, but McIlroy has fiercely defended it.

In a recent interview, he revealed that tennis legend Roger Federer was a huge role model for the way he balanced tennis and family life.

He said: “He arguably is the greatest player of all time, but he doesn’t let that affect his outside life or his family life.

“It seems like he’s got a wonderful balance between the two. The way he is with Mirka, the way he is with his kids, the way he is with his parents. He’s a wonderful role model for me.

“The thing is, I play at least 22 times around the world in a calendar year, which is as much as, if not more than, some of the other top players in the world.

“It’s just that I limit my schedule in the U.S. because I have a heavy schedule in the fall internationally.”
