Sparks sign ex-Valkyries second-round pick with historic background

The Los Angeles Sparks are making moves as the 2026 WNBA season winds down to the final stretch of games. The upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup will put a pause on the league’s action, but that won’t stop teams from making signings.

Los Angeles made the move to sign Shyanne Sellers to the roster ahead of the final weeks of regular-season action. Sellers was originally a second-round selection in the 2025 WNBA Draft, first representing the Golden State Valkyries.

However, she didn’t get to play for them as Golden State waived her. She went to the Atlanta Dream off waivers but eventually had the same fate.

Sellers now starts a new chapter of her career with the Sparks. What is significant about the signing is the history she made throughout her time in college, presenting upside for the retooling squad in Los Angeles.

“A native of Aurora, Ohio, Sellers played four seasons at Maryland, where she became the first player in program history to record at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists. She finished her career ranked No. 12 in program history with 1,676 points and No. 3 with 523 assists,” the team’s press release read.

How Sparks played against Storm

The Sparks hope to end the season on a positive note despite being ineligible for the playoffs. Their 90-74 road win over the Storm was a step in the right direction.

Three players scored in double-digits for Los Angeles in the win. Nneka Ogwumike led the team with 23 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Rae Burrell came next with 22 points and four rebounds, while Cameron Brink had 11 points and six rebounds.

Los Angeles improved to a 15-25 record on the season, sitting at sixth place in the Western Conference standings. They are above the Phoenix Mercury and the Storm while trailing the Portland Fire and the Dallas Wings.

The Sparks will be on break due to the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup. They return to action when they face the Wings on Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. ET.
