Red Sox make decision on Sonny Gray after 16-1 loss to Yankees

The Boston Red Sox were on the wrong end of a lopsided loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. The Yankees dropped 16 runs on Boston at Yankee Stadium to send Boston home embarrassed. Ahead of their next series against the Seattle Mariners, Boston is shaking up its rotation a bit.

“Righthander Sonny Gray, the Red Sox’s best pitcher this season and the arm on which they have most relied over the past month, will not take his regular turn in the rotation Tuesday. Instead, he will pitch Saturday against the Orioles in Baltimore, he said. That will be 10 days after his most recent appearance,” Boston Globe reporter Tim Healey reported on Sunday.

As Healey pointed out, this means Gray will go over a week between starts. His last outing came on August 26 against the Miami Marlins. The veteran hurler turned in a solid performance, allowing just two runs in five innings. However, Boston was shut out by Miami, with Gray taking the loss.

Gray has emerged as the team’s ace throughout the 2026 regular season. The veteran has pitched to a 2.82 ERA, which is fourth in the American League among qualified pitchers. The 36-year-old leads the team with 143.2 innings pitched this season, as well.

The Red Sox will turn to Payton Tolle on Monday before handing the ball to Patrick Sandoval on Wednesday. It’s unclear at this time who will take the ball in place of Gray on Tuesday. In any event, Boston is giving its best pitcher a bit of extra rest with the final month of the season approaching.
