Former TCU star’s feel-good story continues after Patriots roster decision

For every highly touted prospect in the NFL Draft who hears his name called, there is an unheralded player waiting for a chance that may never come. An example of the latter was Channing Canada, who went undrafted in April after a notable three-year stint at TCU.

A month later, he was picked up by the New England Patriots. It was a second shot at achieving his dream of making it to the NFL. It would be a shame to waste it. Canada put his head down and went to work.

The 24-year-old cornerback joined training camp without the security or the benefit of the doubt of being a blue-chip prospect. With no draft status to fall back on, Canada had to make himself impossible to overlook.

On Sunday, everything paid off for the 24-year-old cornerback, as he was named to the opening roster of the Patriots, as reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

“Another great UDFA story: Patriots CB Channing Canada, who made the 53-man roster after a terrific preseason. The former TCU star will also contribute on special teams,” wrote Schultz on X.

After attending Hahnville High School in Boutte, Louisiana, he played for Trinity Valley Community College, where he became a top-ranked JUCO recruit.

He went to TCU and immediately became a key contributor. He recorded career numbers of 81 total tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and three passes defended with the Horned Frogs.

By keeping Canada, along with Tanner Arkin and Khalil Jacobs, the Patriots have an undrafted rookie make the opening roster in 22 of the last 23 seasons, as noted by New England reporter Evan Lazar.

Canada will play behind Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, and Karon Prunty.
