Zach Ertz teases potential return to Eagles to break franchise record

Zach Ertz is one of the best and most accomplished tight ends of his generation, but the longtime Philadelphia Eagles standout is looking to make a comeback during the late stages of his career. Ertz’s 2025 season was cut short when he suffered a severe knee injury with the Washington Commanders.

There was some speculation, or even assumption, that such a serious injury would force the 35-year old to retire, but that’s not in the cards for him. Ertz is a free agent and still wants to make a comeback in 2026, and that triumphant return could even come with the Eagles while he chases one of Philadelphia’s franchise records, according to Jeff McLane of the Inquirer.

“Ertz said he would love to end his career where it started and have a chance at the Eagles receptions record that he’s 11 shy from breaking,” McLane wrote. “He said he wants to retire in midnight green either way. Lurie said he would welcome the symbolic gesture as he has for other franchise greats who left the team.”

Ertz spent the first nine years of his career with the Eagles before he was traded to the Arizona Cardinals back in 2021. During his time there, he caught 579 balls for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also famously was the recipient of the final touchdown of the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII win over the New England Patriots.

The Eagles don’t necessarily have a big need at tight end after bringing back Dallas Goedert, but adding Ertz to the equation would give them two capable pass catchers at the position while not putting too much of a burden on Ertz while he comes back from injury. Whenever he is ready to play, he would be a quality red zone target for Jalen Hurts and company.

Much of the focus this offseason for the Eagles has been whether AJ Brown would be traded or not. If the star wideout is dealt, the possible addition of Ertz would become even more important for Nick Sirianni’s club.
