Training camp interceptions are part of Eagles QB Jalen Hurts’ process

When it comes to the 2026 edition of Philadelphia Eagles training camp, the biggest storyline has been the sheer volume of interceptions Jalen Hurts has thrown.

Now granted, there are extenuating factors involved, like Vic Fangio’s defense being very good, Sean Mannion installing a new offense, and top targets like DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon spending much of the summer on the sidelines, but that still hasn’t stopped football fans from questioning Hurts’ game heading into the preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Discussing his seventh summer in Eagles training camp, Hurts commented on his ball placement, noting that when a new system is being installed, learning the boundaries when the bullets aren’t live is a paramount part of the process.

“I think generally speaking, you learn from every play, regardless of how the result is, especially when you’re putting in something new. And so, I think every time you come out here and you get a chance to be on the grass, you need to take the coach and apply it, be aggressive with it. And then, once you’re experienced, you reflect on it, think about it, and you can play the game in this type of way, in that type of way,” Hurts said.

“So, I use the term calibrate with you guys and all of that, the whole entire process is on your mind of how you calculate when you play the game. So, it’s been a really good camp. I’m happy about the experiences that we’ve had to be able to grow from them. I’m very excited about the opportunity to be able to practice with the guys. I received a call that the guys that are going to start were banged up, so, just to have the time to build chemistry with everyone as a unit, I feel like that was very valuable.”

Is it concerning that Hurts is throwing a number of interceptions this summer? Sure, but historically speaking, he’s one of the least intercepted quarterbacks in the NFL, with just one season with double-digit picks on his resume over his first six as a pro. Considering how often Hurts has been criticized for being overly conservative as a passer, especially over the middle of the field, letting it loose in camp might actually be a good thing, especially if he can get more run with his usual starters before Week 1.

Jalen Hurts gave a lengthy answer on how he views interceptions in camp.

He said he’s tried to learn from every play as they install a new scheme and highlighted the “calibrating” that they’ve had to do the last few weeks.
