NFL will no longer play Pro Bowl game after 75 years

In shocking news, the NFL has decided to cancel the Pro Bowl game. The game that celebrates the best players in the NFL has been played since 1951. However, the game itself has gone from a showcase of talent to a clear burden on players in recent years. Not only do players frequently decline invites, leading to role players and bench contributors earning the accolade of Pro Bowler, but the game itself has been a low-effort affair.

Players have prioritized their health over actually giving effort on the gridiron recently. The game has even been played in flag football form in recent years. Jonathan Jones was the first to report the jaw-dropping news.

The drastic decision comes after years of the NFL trying to improve the Pro Bowl weekend, along with the viewership of the game. Last year, the Pro Bowl was integrated with Super Bowl festivities. Before then, different formats were tested out, and the league even added skills competitions. Regardless of what changed/was added, it became clear that the Pro Bowl was a dying game.

The decision to cancel the Pro Bowl game comes directly after the 75th anniversary of the game. The “American Conference” beat the National Conference 28-27 back in 1951.

While the game itself is no more, the accolade of being a Pro Bowler still remains. In fact, being named to the Pro Bowl team will be even more prestigious going forward because the league won’t need to fill out the roster with alternates.

The NFL has tweaked the Pro Bowl so much in recent years that it wouldn’t be a surprise if they eventually brought the game back, but for now, and during the 2026 season, it is a thing of the past.
