Virginia Tech signs former Clemson guard

Virginia Tech basketball pulled off a letdown pursuit of a March Madness bid last season. Head coach Mike Young managed to win 19 games for the third time in his tenure, yet still couldn’t make the field of 68. So now the Hokies and their head coach have swooped up a former Clemson guard via the College Basketball Transfer Portal Wednesday.

Butta Johnson is heading to Blacksburg according to CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz. And this will be his third collegiate stop.

“Made nine starts at Clemson last season. Before Clemson, was a two-year starter at UAB. Has 163 career made 3-pointers,” Zenitz posted on X, formerly Twitter.

So Young gains a new sharpshooter to fix Virginia Tech’s shooting woes of last season. The Hokies ranked 10th among 18 Atlantic Coast Conference teams in scoring. Though they landed at No. 7 overall in three-point field goal percentage.

Johnson lit up ACC defenses before. He delivered seven games of surpassing the double-digit scoring mark, including hitting 15 against Georgia Tech while with the Tigers. Johnson even dropped 13 on SEC foe Georgia during the regular season.

He heads to a team that lost in six of their last nine games, some coming in one-score affairs. The Hokies even took four defeats in coming down to one last possession.

Johnson rises as one of 10 newcomers heading to the ACC program aiming to snap its skid of missing March Madness. He joins former North Carolina State center Musa Sagnia as one of two newcomers who played within the conference.
