Thomas Castellanos officially commits to Texas Tech

Thomas Castellanos has committed to the Red Raiders, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Castellanos previously played for UCF, Boston College, and Florida State before choosing Texas Tech as the next stop in his college career.

He arrives in Lubbock with extensive experience and proven production. Castellanos has accumulated 6,449 passing yards and 48 touchdown passes during his career. His ability to create plays with his legs also separates him from many quarterbacks, as he has added 24 rushing touchdowns.

That dual-threat skill set gives Texas Tech another intriguing option at the position. Castellanos’ best stretch came at Boston College, where he became one of the most dangerous rushing quarterbacks in college football. His mobility can stress opposing defenses, especially when designed runs and off-script plays force defenders to account for him outside the pocket. The interceptions are a problem, but rushing for 13 touchdowns in one season is not seen often for a QB in the ACC.

There are now questions about how the quarterback depth chart will unfold, but Castellanos did not choose his fourth program to sit quietly in the background. He will expect a legitimate opportunity to earn meaningful snaps. His competition will be against Will Hammond, who would still get some playing time if Castellanos becomes the starter later on.

Pete Nakos expects Hammond to remain the starter on the depth chart, so Castellanos may have to quickly learn the playbook to get him on the field as soon as possible.

The Red Raiders will take on Abilene Christian on Sept. 5 for their home opener.
