Golfer suspended for placing bets on PGA Tour competition

It doesn’t matter the sport — you will get caught if you gamble on sports as a professional athlete.

Wednesday is just another example of it. PGA Tour golfer Matt Gogel is the latest professional athlete to get caught placing bets and violating the integrity of the game, the PGA Tour announced.

Here is the league’s statement below:

“The PGA TOUR announced Wednesday that PGA TOUR Champions member Matt Gogel has been suspended for violating the PGA TOUR Integrity Program. Gogel placed bets on PGA TOUR competition but did not bet on tournaments in which he was a participant. Gogel is suspended from PGA TOUR-sanctioned competition for six months. His suspension began on August 23, 2026, and is through February 22, 2027. Gogel has cooperated fully with the TOUR throughout the process.”

Gogel then released a statement of his own.

“In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA TOUR policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf. I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA TOUR events, PGA TOUR Champions events or any tournament in which I participated. I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA TOUR Champions.”

This news comes on a day when LIV Golf is reportedly making major changes. LIV members are being laid off due to the real threat that the league will officially end in the coming days, weeks, or months. It may only be a matter of time.
