Mikaela Mayer lays out six-fight retirement plan including Claressa Shields mega bout and Chantelle Cameron rematch

As Mikaela Mayer enters the twilight of her career, the American’s sights are firmly set on cementing her legacy.

She will go a long way toward doing that if she can overcome fellow pound-for-pound superstar Chantelle Cameron in a WBA, WBC and WBO super welterweight unification clash at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on Saturday night.

It marks the first fight of Mayer’s fresh three-year deal with women’s boxing powerhouse Most Valuable Promotions (MVP).

She signed with Jake Paul’s upstart promotion in March after a long and successful tenure with Top Rank, and anticipates that it will be the last contract she ever puts pen to paper on.

Mayer will be closing in on 40 by the time her term with MVP is up.

And while the three-weight world champion insists she feels better than ever, she is aware that Father Time is undefeated.

“While I feel amazing right now, It’s just a question of how long this will last,” Mayer told talkSPORT.com.

“I’m 36, and I’ve just signed a three-year contract with MVP, which will probably be my last.

“I don’t know if I want to go past six more fights or three more years. I don’t really want to be fighting into my forties.

“I have always set out to fight the best fighters I can fight, and so this next chapter is about that.”

Mayer has a plethora of names on her hit list, but before she can start ticking them off, she must first face Cameron in back-to-back bouts, as per the stipulations of her contract.

“Chantelle Cameron was always on my list. I’ve always wanted to fight her, so I’m really happy that this is my next move,” added Mayer.

“We do have a rematch clause, by the way. She has one, and so do I, which is unusual.

“So I guess we are fighting twice. Who knows? Maybe this will turn into another trilogy like [Amanda] Serrano and [Katie] Taylor because we have the styles to make for an exciting fight.

“Personally, I plan on kicking her a*** so bad that she doesn’t want to activate the rematch clause.

“Then, I plan on moving down to 147lbs and unifying with Lauren Price after Cameron.

“And then hopefully I can fight Claressa Shields now that she has moved back down to 160lbs.

“I also want to become undisputed at 154lbs, and Oshae Jones currently has the other belt (IBF), so I’d want that fight.

“After that, I don’t know where my body will be, but those are five really big fights.

“The sixth one will have to be another big one if it’s my last.”
