The new PGA Tour season-ending structure, explained

The PGA Tour is having quite the week.

By its end the Tour will have a season-long winner as the Tour Championship wraps at East Lake, but as the week began the Tour itself looked well beyond this weekend and into the future.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp spoke at length and unveiled what is on the horizon for the greatest Tour in the world. Amid all of the discussion and announcements was the reveal of next year’s season-ending structure which is an amendment to how the FedExCup Playoffs have worked.

Here is what you need to know:

• The Tour’s Championship Series will feature top performers competing head-to-head across the season in 72-hole stroke-play events with a cut
• The new season-ending structure will take place over three weeks, beginning with the PGA Tour Championship Series Finale
• The Championship Series Finale is the final 72-hole, stroke-play event of the season that finalizes the season-long points list… setting the field for the Tour Championship
• The new-look Tour Championship will feature match play over two weeks at different venues
• First will be the group stage
• Second will be a four-round, match-play bracket to decide the Tour Champion

It has been noted that the Tour Championship will rotate annually across prestigious venues and that is exciting to think about in terms of what courses can come into play.

It is very clear and obvious that the PGA Tour is moving at lightning speed under Rolapp’s guidance and that the future is going to be incredibly exciting.
