Yankees trade for Luis Garcia Jr. in Nationals blockbuster

The New York Yankees have been looking to add another bat to the lineup. The Yankees have been connected to both Luis Garcia Jr. and Luis Arraez.

Now, the Yankees have added that bat, completing a deal with the Wahsington Nationals, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

“BREAKING: The New York Yankees are acquiring infielder Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals, sources tell ESPN. Garcia, 26, leads the National League in slugging percentage and is hitting .283/.313/.560 with 23 home runs. He’s under club control through end of 2027,” Passan posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The Nationals will be getting a haul back in return, bringing in four pitchers, according to Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic.

“The Nationals return, per source: RHP Ben Grable, RHP Yovanny Cruz, RHP Jack Cebert, RHP Jake Bird,” Nusbaum posted on X.

Grable, who is currently in Double-A, is the 25th-ranked prospect in the Yankees system. Meanwhile, Jack Cebert is the 14th-ranked prospect in the system. Yovanny Cruz, a reliever, has played four games with the Yankees so far this year, giving up one run in five and a third innings of work. Finally, Jake Bird is in his first full season with the Yanks. He was traded to the Yankees during the 2026 season, and this year has pitched 36 games for the team. He is 1-1 with a 5.93 ERA.

Garcia is having a career year. He is hitting .283 with a .313 on-base percentage. He also has 23 home runs and 76 RBIs, both of them already career highs. He has primarily played first base this year for the Nationals, but has played second and shortstop for the team in the past.
