49ers host former Eagles, Browns pass rusher on visit

The San Francisco 49ers are looking at options to improve their defense. During NFL training camp, San Francisco extended an invitation to a journeyman pass rusher. That player ended up taking a visit.

“Veteran free agent edge Ogbo Okoronkwo, who played last year for the Eagles, worked out for the 49ers today, source said. Before Philly, he played two seasons for the Browns,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Okoronkwo didn’t record a single tackle during the 2025 NFL regular season. He was placed on injured reserve by Philadelphia. In 2024 with the Cleveland Browns, the pass rusher posted 23 total tackles.

Okoronkwo is quite a journeyman. He has played with the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Browns, and Eagles. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The defensive end has appeared in 80 regular season games in his career. He has posted 132 total tackles. In 2022 with the Texans, he had a career-high in sacks with five on the season.

San Francisco hopes to return to the NFL Playoffs in 2026. The 49ers finished the 2025 campaign with a 12-5 record, and made the postseason. The team defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, before losing to the Seattle Seahawks.

This offseason, the team has been without their head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan suffered injuries in a car accident, although he is doing better.

“The 49ers head coach has been seen at practice more as he continues to recover from his concussion and injuries suffered in a car accident. He even spoke to the team and led a meeting on Saturday,” 49ers WebZone reported.

Time will tell if the 49ers reach a deal with Okoronkwo. San Francisco starts their NFL preseason games on August 13, with a contest against the Tennessee Titans.
