Jadeveon Clowney’s reasons for joining Texans don’t include money

Recently, it was announced that free agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney would be joining the Houston Texans in free agency. The move reunites Clowney with the team that selected him number one overall back in 2014.

Now, Clowney has given a telephone interview and revealed what went into his decision to join the Texans.

“It was a family decision. It wasn’t about the money, it was about chasing my legacy and chasing a Super Bowl. I’ve got a lot of game left and want to contribute,” he said, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. “I was excited about playing with those guys (Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter), too. Good defense and I can help contribute and good chance to chase a Super Bowl. I know what it looks like. I can help this squad.”

Clowney was also receiving interest from the Cleveland Browns, another team with whom he’s spent time during his career, before ultimately choosing to return to the Texans.

At the age of 33, Clowney remains a productive pass rusher who now joins what was one of the most ferocious defensive units in the NFL last year. Unfortunately, Houston’s offense didn’t come along for the ride in the playoffs, leading the Texans to lose to the New England Patriots in the divisional round this past season.

While the Texans’ defense can seemingly only get so much better than they already are, having Clowney around adds depth and also gives the team a respected veteran presence in the locker room.

The Texans are slated to kick off their new season on September 13 vs the Buffalo Bills at home.
