Ex-Premier League striker Victor Anichebe could buy fairytale EFL club

Former Premier League striker Victor Anichebe is reportedly spearheading a bid to take over Bromley.

Anichebe is said to be leading talks to buy the newly-promoted League One club, amid their rise up the EFL.

Bromley have gone from the National League to the third tier of the English football pyramid in just two years.

Following promotion to League Two in 2024, they went on to get promoted to League One at the end of last season.

It’s widely considered a fairytale story, as this will be their first ever campaign at this level – and now they could end up being taken over by an ex-Premier League star.

Anichebe is now locked in talks with Bromley owner Robin Stanton-Gleaves, according to The Sun. talkSPORT has contacted Bromley for comment.

The 38-year-old was also linked to a potential takeover of non-league side Gateshead last year.

But now, he could enter ownership at a higher level, with Bromley bosses said to understand that they need some extra cash to compete in League One.

It is reported that Anichebe is already having an impact on Bromley’s summer recruitment ahead of a proposed takeover.

He is the owner of Lumira Group, who are ‘a long-term holding company investing in sport, education, healthcare and infrastructure across the UK’.

The former Nigeria international was recently involved in a £20million proposal for a new leisure development in Liverpool.

And he could be closing in on becoming a football club owner for the first time as he spearheads his group in negotiations.

Bromley kickstart their 2026/27 campaign with a Carabao Cup first round tie against Reading on Saturday.

They then play their first ever League One match against Barnsley a week later on Saturday, August 15.

Anichebe’s playing career

Anichebe has moved into the business side of sports since retiring from football in the summer of 2018.

But many fans will remember his days playing in the Premier League, where he made over 200 appearances.

He scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists across his spells with Everton, Sunderland and West Brom from 2006 to 2017.

The ex-forward spent the longest time at Everton, playing 168 times for the Toffees, scoring 26 goals in all competitions.

For West Brom, he netted nine times in 63 games, while for Sunderland, he scored three goals in 19 appearances.

On the international stage, Anichebe picked up 11 caps for Nigeria, scoring one goal for his country.
