Another Gavin Williams gem puts Guardians pitcher in Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale territory

The Cleveland Guardians are fighting to stay close to the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central race. If they can eventually find a way to overtake Chicago’s South Side team or even make the playoffs as a Wild Card team, they may have to give pitcher Gavin Williams a pat on the back for the accomplishment.

The Cleveland right-hander has been razor sharp and pitching the best baseball of his career. He was on top of his game once again Sunday as he pitched 5.2 scoreless innings the Guardians’ home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Guaardians earned a 5-0 victory and improved their record to 57-56.

He completely shut down the Diamondbacks, who are fighting for playoff positioning in the National League and currently sit in the No. 2 Wild Card spot. Williams held the Diamondbacks to one hit and allowed just one base on balls. He dominated the Arizona lineup as he struck out 10 during his assignment.

This is nothing new for Williams as he been on a tremendous roll. This was his 5th consecutive game with 10 strikeouts or more with 1 base on balls or less.

This type of sensational pitching has allowed him to join two of the great pitchers in recent MLB history. Former Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw accomplished the feat 6 times during the 2016 season while Chris Sale also had 5 consecutive games matching the description while pitching for the Red Sox in 2018.

Chase DeLauter drove in 3 runs for the Guardians while Cleveland catcher Patrick Bailey also contributed to the edge with a home run.
