Zhao Xintong will return to the Crucible as defending champion following his victory over Mark Williams in last year’s final which saw him become the first Chinese player ever to be crowned world champion.

However no first-time winner has ever successfully defended the title since the tournament moved to the Crucible 50 years ago, leaving the 29-year-old in a battle to avoid becoming the latest player to fall foul of the Crucible curse.

‘The Cyclone’ no doubt heads into Sheffield having enjoyed the best season so far, with four tournament victories including cruising to the Tour Championship title last month.

Xintong dropped just eight frames across three best of 19 matches, including a 10-3 thrashing against world number one Judd Trump in the final, leaving him with three titles from his last six tournament entries.

Trump is priced as the second favourite for what would be his second World Championship victory, the number one ranked player in the world has only won one tournament this year, which is low by his standards, but has reached four finals and at least the semi finals in nine of his last 11 tournament entries.

All eyes will no doubt be on seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan as he looks to pull clear of Stephen Hendry’s tally for a record breaking eighth title in the modern era.

The 50-year-old has been more selective over the tournaments he’s been entering this season but has still reached two finals and will be well rested for his first round match against Crucible debutant He Guoqiang.

Four-time world champion Mark Selby has also had a strong season, one of only two players to have won three tournaments so far, including the UK Championship, after a few quiet years by his high standards following his most recent world title win in 2021.
