Bears news: Zavion Thomas torches Titans defender in his postgame interview too

Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas made his long-awaited preseason debut in a 24-15 win over the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. The 22-year-old caught all five passes thrown his way for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas needed only one offensive play to make his impact. With the Bears backed up at their own 3-yard line, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent quickly looked toward Thomas after Roschon Johnson picked up a blitz. Titans cornerback Keydrain Calligan stumbled during the route, leaving Thomas with separation. Thomas caught the pass at Chicago’s 33-yard line and raced 97 yards for the score, while safety Jerrick Reed II could only chase him and swipe at his leg.

After the game, Thomas was asked whether the Titans defender had any chance of stopping him. His response was blunt:

“Nahhh. He didn’t have a chance.”

The rookie third-round pick out of LSU continued producing after the long touchdown. He averaged 28 yards per reception and added a 39-yard punt return and a 22-yard kickoff return. His punt return nearly resulted in another touchdown and further showcased his ability to create explosive plays in the return game.

Thomas had missed the Bears’ first two preseason games because of a knee injury. He remained on the field into the third quarter and finished the night as Chicago’s leading receiver by yardage.

Thomas did have one mistake, fumbling an attempted fly-sweep exchange in the first quarter, with Titans defensive end Jacob Martin recovering.

Bagent also put together an efficient performance while Caleb Williams watched from the sideline. He completed 16 of 17 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while the Bears converted four of five fourth-down attempts with him directing the offense. Bagent’s other touchdown came on a fourth-and-goal play from Tennessee’s 2-yard line, when he escaped pressure before finding Maurice Alexander in the back of the end zone.

NFL teams are required to reach the 53-player roster limit by 5 p.m. Sunday. Thomas is projected to compete for a potential No. 4 receiver role while also serving as the Bears’ likely primary returner. Chicago opens the regular season Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C.
