Titans HC Robert Saleh reveals how many 53-man roster spots are up in the air

Robert Saleh isn’t ready to close the book on the Tennessee Titans’ 53-man roster just yet. With the Titans coming off their preseason finale against the Chicago Bears, Saleh and his coaching staff have a quick turnaround to make their final roster decisions.

While some players have seemingly secured their spots, the head coach made it clear that several battles remain unsettled. Saleh explained that performances in the preseason finale could still change the team’s evaluation of players who are competing for roster spots.

“Yeah, absolutely they can,” Saleh said when asked if players could make a final push. “There’s going to be stuff that shows up on tape, where if it was neck and neck, someone can take a leap ahead, or if it was, I mean, someone could have had the inside track and lost it, you know what I’m saying?”

That means players who entered the final game with an advantage aren’t necessarily guaranteed a place on the initial 53-man roster.

Saleh, however, emphasized that the Titans won’t make those decisions based solely on what happened in the preseason finale. The first-year Tennessee head coach wants his staff to consider the full body of work from throughout the offseason.

“But the discipline in it is to make sure that we’re taking the entire body of work, from the entire, from all the way back to OTAs and the improvement,” Saleh said.

That approach could make the final roster decisions particularly difficult for Tennessee. The Titans have spent the offseason reshaping the roster under Saleh, and several position groups have featured competitions for backup and depth roles.

The preseason finale provided one final opportunity for those players to strengthen their cases, but Saleh isn’t allowing one performance to completely override everything that came before it.

The Titans now have little time to finalize their initial 53-man roster, with the NFL’s deadline arriving Sunday. Teams around the league are already beginning the process of making cuts as they prepare for the regular season.

“Again, like I said, it’s a quick turnaround, a lot of decisions to be made, but we feel good about it,” Saleh said.
