Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow breaks down 99th percentile extension
Tyler Glasnow spends a concerning amount of time on the injured list, but when he is on the mound, he can mystify spectators with just his presence. Yes, the veteran right-handed starting pitcher is an impressive talent who can bewilder some of the best hitters in the game when he is at his best. Last year’s playoff showing strongly supports that notion. However, he is also a physical force who can do things that others simply cannot.
Glasnow ranks in the 99th percentile with a 7.5-foot extension, per the MLB Network X account. Big-leaguers pride themselves on their approach, but it is extremely difficult to brace oneself for such a phenomenon. Although the 2024 All-Star has always been able to utilize his 6-foot-8 frame to some degree, he is much more disciplined in how he moves during his windup. Glasnow admitted that he used to focus on quickly releasing his pitches with optimal force. The mindset has changed a bit, however.
“If I can work properly and have my spine and everything working well, I don’t necessarily need to use a lot of force,” the 33-year-old told “MLB Tonight.” “My extension, just being as long as I am, is always going to be pretty long. I think the only time I get into trouble is if I’m not rotating properly, and then I’m compensating with my back as opposed to moving from my hips.”

Even though the Dodgers already have a fantastic rotation that consists of World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, two-time Cy Young Tarik Skubal and two-time Cy Young Blake Snell, a healthy Tyler Glasnow can make an enormous difference in a five or seven-game series. He just needs to keep tightening up his mechanics.
The imposing hurler pitched five innings of three-run ball with seven strikeouts and zero walks in Tuesday’s 4-3 loss versus the Atlanta Braves. Glasnow showed some rust after missing more than two and a half months with back spasms, but he still has time to perfect his execution before the playoffs begin. No. 31 will get back at it for Sunday’s series finale against the Detroit Tigers.
