Marshall Faulk sends stern message after Southern loss to Alabama State

Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk sounded off on his team’s effort against Alabama State in the 30-17 loss on Saturday afternoon. Faulk told the media in attendance that he’s looking for better from his team and that they’ll look for other options if mistakes continue.

“You cannot do that. And the reality is this, we’re gonna work with those guys on those things and try to get them to fix it. If not, we’re gonna find guys to play that might not be as talented, that might not be the best in that department, but at least they won’t beat themselves. You just cannot have the mistakes and the penalties and the things that we did to put ourselves in the position that we were in.”

Faulk pinpointed penalties as what cost Southern the game.

“Some costly holding penalties, just different things that we always talk about that are drive killers, and they’re hard to come back from. We have to get better at just being disciplined in the arena of how to play smart football. And how to do the number one thing that I told you guys we can’t do, which is beat yourself.”

But despite his criticism and ultimate ultimatum for the team, he still believed that there were right spots, such as the defense.

“I challenged them, like the last drive that they had in our end zone after we turned it over on downs, let them know it’s drives like that that you start to build your character. You don’t build character when things are good. We’re down two scores, and it’s like, right now you get a stop, we have a chance. And they went out there and they forced a field goal.

He continued, “It’s so easy for me to sit here and pick out what they did wrong, but it’s something like that. In the moments when it may seem like you don’t really have a reason to play for, they went out there and they got a stop, man. They got a stop, and I’m proud of what they were able to do.”

And he also articulated that he was pleased with the majority of his players.

“For the majority of the guys, I was pleased with their effort. The guys played hard. We just have to finish plays, we gotta finish drives. As good a job as Alabama State did, we really put ourselves in some bad situations.”
