How Fever star Caitlin Clark winning MVP could create a huge problem for Indiana

Caitlin Clark winning the WNBA MVP award would be a dream scenario for the Indiana Fever. But it could also create a difficult financial question for the franchise sooner than expected. The Fever have built one of the league’s most promising cores around Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. But the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement has changed the financial landscape considerably, creating an expedited path to maximum-level contracts for standout players still on rookie deals.

Clark is already eligible to renegotiate the final year of her rookie contract under the CBA’s Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract provision because of her previous All-WNBA honors. The Fever exercised her fourth-year option, keeping her under contract through 2027, but the new rules allow her to negotiate a higher salary and an extension.

An MVP award would only raise the stakes further.

“If we want to just quickly talk about the salary situation with the Indiana Fever, so Aliyah Boston is on her epic contract,” WNBA analyst Rachel DeMita said on her Courtside Club podcast. “Now, Caitlin Clark will also be eligible for a max contract next season because of this provision.”

Boston already represents an example of how quickly the Fever’s financial picture can change. Her new contract was made possible through the same accelerated pathway for players who earn major league honors while on their initial contracts. Meanwhile, Mitchell is already playing on a maximum-level deal, meaning Indiana could soon have three players commanding a significant portion of its salary cap.

“If she wins MVP this season, Kelsey Mitchell is also on a max contract deal,” DeMita continued. “So you have three super max eligible players, or at least max eligible players for the squad next year.”

That is where a potential problem emerges for Indiana. The Fever would undoubtedly want to keep their core intact, especially considering what Clark, Mitchell and Boston have accomplished together. But building a complete roster around multiple maximum-level contracts becomes considerably more challenging.

The irony is that the Fever’s success could accelerate that challenge. Clark winning MVP would be another sign that Indiana’s investment in its young superstar has paid off, while simultaneously strengthening her leverage to command a significantly larger deal.

The Fever have already seen their offense reach another level with Clark and Mitchell leading the way. For now, the organization can enjoy having one of the WNBA’s most talented cores.
