Sabrina Ionescu reaches new low never seen before in WNBA history

The New York Liberty have been mired in an inconsistent season despite already clinching a playoff berth, and part of it has been due to the up and down season from All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu. The former Oregon star dealt with injury issues early this season, and she’s yet to find a consistent rhythm offensively with only a handful of games remaining before the playoffs.

Amid the Liberty’s win against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, Sabrina Ionescu reached an unenviable mark in the WNBA record books, setting the worst percentage from the 3-point line in an eight game span with at least 50 attempts, as per Jack Maloney of CBS Sports.

Against the Sky, Ionescu shot 0-of-3 from the 3-point line. In the past eight games, she is 8-of-53, or 15.1 percent. That surpasses the previous low mark set by Phoenix Mercury guard Kahleah Copper who went 9-of-51, 17.6 percent, earlier this season. Before that, the mark was held by Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey who went 9-of-58 and 9-of-51, respectively, last season.

Ionescu has always been one of the most dead-eye shooters in the game, going back to her college days with the Ducks. She held an average of 42.2 percent shooting from 3-point range across four seasons at Oregon, with only one year shooting under 40 percent.

Since beginning her WNBA career, she’s connected on an average of 34.5 percent from distance in seven seasons. Her 3-point shooting percentages haven’t been as prolific as her college days, but following Sunday’s game, she’s shooting a career-worst 29.5 percent from deep. Her previous career-low was 29.9 percent which she shot last season.
