Yankees’ Aaron Boone says quiet part out loud after lackluster loss to Red Sox

NEW YORK– Saturday’s daytime portion of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox did not feature any real offensive production from the home team. The New York Yankees only recorded four hits as they suffered a 6-0 defeat to their division rival.

Red Sox starter Jake Bennett tossed six scoreless innings and struck out seven batters en route to his ninth win of the campaign. Yankees manager Aaron Boone did not mince words after the game and acknowledged that his lineup has struggled to remain a consistent threat.

“We’ve scored one run in two games, so we have to be better than that. Today we just were on the heels of a night where we didn’t score and played really well; we played poorly today. 
You know, simple as that,” Boone said. “So we’ve got to turn the page in a hurry here and go out and try and grab one of these doubleheader games today. But we need to play better, and part of that is offense.”

Wilyer Abreu helped the Red Sox strike first when he launched a first-inning home run off Yankees southpaw Carlos Rodon, who lasted only 4.2 innings and permitted two runs and three hits while striking out five batters.

New York had multiple chances to change the complexion of the contest. After Amed Rosario reached first on a throwing error in the fourth and advanced to second on a passed ball, Heliot Ramos belted a double just past center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela.

Despite the extra-base hit, Rafaela and Boston’s defense recovered to complete a solid relay and gun down Rosario at the plate.

“I think Rosie got stuck a little bit where it looked like he was going to scamper back and catch the ball, but got himself stuck in a position where his momentum wasn’t good, and with one out, we’ve got to be in a better position to score more seamlessly there,” Boone said. “It took two perfect throws. That’s a tough one in the moment.”

Boston’s lineup earned another run in the fifth when catcher Ali Sanchez let a ball get behind him, and they proceeded to tally four more in the top of the ninth against Ryan Yarbrough. New York could not scratch across anything in the bottom half against Jovani Moran as it suffered its eighth shutout loss of the year.

The Yankees and Red Sox are separated by less than three games in the American League Wild Card standings. With two games between them remaining and their season series separated by one game in the loss column, a tiebreaker would be decided by how the pair of contests shake out.
