Yankees’ Aaron Boone reveals Ryan McMahon’s expected injury return date

With the New York Yankees currently in a series with the Boston Red Sox this weekend, the team is looking to receive the injury return of a key player. While the Yankees prepare for the playoffs right around the corner and the team still awaits progress from star Aaron Judge, manager Aaron Boone would have a positive update when it comes to Ryan McMahon.

The 31-year-old third baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) due to a thumb injury, as the last game he played was on Aug. 19 against the Baltimore Orioles. Currently with Double-A Somerset for a rehab assignment, Boone said that the expectation is that McMahon will be activated on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for the second game of the series against the Los Angeles Angels.

“Clarke Schmidt and Ryan McMahon are with Double-A Somerset for a Minor League rehab game. The Yankees are aiming to activate McMahon on Sept. 1,” Bryan Hoch of MLB.com wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

So far this season with New York, McMahon has recorded a .216 batting average to go along with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs in 106 games and 278 at-bats.

Boone would also say that the Yankees’ third baseman will travel with the club after Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox, joining them for the aforementioned series against the Angels. Boone would say that it’ll be beneficial for McMahon to get some at-bats in the minor leagues before coming back to the team from the thumb injury.

“We figure while he’s ready to go, he’ll get some at-bats and a game in and then he’ll fly with us to California,” Boone said, via MLB.com.

At any rate, it remains to be seen if the expectation from Boone and New York comes through with McMahon coming back to the team from the thumb issue for Tuesday’s contest. Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s outing against the Red Sox, the team has a 76-58 record, which puts them second in the AL East.
