Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Dylan Cease extended one of baseball’s longest modern strikeout streaks Friday, becoming the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 2001 to record at least seven strikeouts in 19 consecutive starts.

Cease struck out eight across six innings in Toronto’s 8-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Rogers Centre. He allowed four hits, one run, and one walk across 92 pitches, improving to 9-5 and lowering his ERA to 2.33.

The streak began May 2 and now spans four months. Friday’s outing increased Cease’s season total to an American League-leading 217 strikeouts through 150 1/3 innings. He also owns a 1.05 WHIP as the regular season enters its final month. Those totals place him among the league’s most productive starters.

Dominic Canzone opened the scoring with a first-inning solo homer, but Cease quickly settled. He struck out the side in the second inning and retired nine consecutive hitters while keeping Seattle from adding another run.

Toronto supported him with 11 hits and three home runs. George Springer went 4-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored, while Nathan Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto also went deep. Okamoto’s sixth-inning shot was his 27th of the season, extending the Blue Jays’ rookie home run record.

The victory improved the Blue Jays to 66-70 on the season, moving the club within 2 1/2 games of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final American League wild-card position.

Cease’s consistency has also strengthened his case in the AL Cy Young Award race. His 19-start run demonstrates sustained swing-and-miss production while Toronto remains within reach of a postseason berth.

With 26 games remaining after Friday’s victory, the Blue Jays need their ace to continue providing dependable innings and strikeouts. His next start offers another opportunity to extend a streak unmatched in a single season for 25 years.
