Bills release veteran punter in favor of rookie 7th-rounder

The Buffalo Bills are moving forward with rookie punter Tommy Doman Jr. after deciding to release veteran Mitch Wishnowsky as part of their roster cuts ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the decision Saturday morning via X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The Bills informed veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky they plan to release him, per source.

Rookie seventh-round pick Tommy Doman Jr. is now in line to punt for Buffalo.”

The move comes after Buffalo completed a perfect 3-0 preseason with a 28-27 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night.

Buffalo selected Doman with the No. 239 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old entered training camp competing with Wishnowsky for the punting job and has now emerged as the Bills’ expected option heading into the regular season.

Wishnowsky brought significant NFL experience to the competition after spending several seasons in the league, but Buffalo ultimately elected to go with the younger, cheaper option at the position.

The punter decision is one of several roster moves the Bills have made following the conclusion of the preseason. Buffalo is also releasing veteran wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr., a three-time Super Bowl champion who appeared in two regular-season games for the Bills during the 2025 campaign.

Buffalo will continue reducing its roster as the regular season approaches.

The Bills will open their 2026 schedule on the road against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. ET on CBS, with Doman now positioned to handle punting duties in Week 1.
