Will Jets have more kicking competition after rough Jason Sanders preseason showing?

The New York Jets may have another decision to make at kicker after Jason Sanders struggled during Friday night’s 23-6 preseason loss to the New York Giants.

New York appeared to settle its kicking competition earlier in the week by releasing Cade York, leaving Sanders as the expected option entering the 2026 regular season. However, Sanders missed an extra point following a first-quarter touchdown and later missed a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper questioned whether Sanders’ performance could push the Jets to explore other options before their Week 1 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

“The Jets appeared to end their kicking competition this week when they released Cade York, but Jason Sanders’s performance on Friday night may have opened things back up,” Alper wrote.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn acknowledged the misses but said the organization will not rush into a decision.

“Am I worried about it? I didn’t like the fact that we missed these field goals, but the thing is we’re not going to panic and we’re going to make sure that we make the right decision to make sure we either fix those issues or we get the right person in here,” Glenn said. “But Jason has been good for us. He’s been good in practice. I’m going to evaluate that and see exactly what direction we’ll go.”

Jason Sanders faces uncertainty ahead of Jets’ Week 1 matchup

Sanders brings significant experience to New York after spending seven seasons as the Miami Dolphins’ kicker. However, he missed the entire 2025 season because of a hip injury before joining the Jets.

His preseason finale now gives New York another factor to evaluate before finalizing its plans at kicker.

The Jets will open the regular season on the road against the Titans on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. ET on CBS, giving Glenn and his staff two weeks to determine whether Sanders remains their answer at the position.
