Broncos coach Sean Payton provides hopeful Marvin Mims update after preseason injury
The Denver Broncos appear to have avoided a significant injury to Marvin Mims Jr. after the wide receiver exited Friday night’s 34-6 preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton provided an encouraging update on Mims after the game, describing the injury as a bruise and indicating the team exercised caution with one of its key offensive weapons.
“With Mims, he’s going to be fine. It’s a bruise,” Payton said, via Pro Football Talk. “We were really more just cautious with him. There were a few guys that we were going to get some snaps with that may have been — certainly front-line guys for us and he was one of those players.”
Mims suffered the injury on a third-down play when he went up for an overthrown pass from quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Mims collided with Vikings safety Jacob Thomas out of bounds before immediately grabbing his right foot after hitting the ground.

The 24-year-old initially attempted to jog toward the sideline but was visibly limping. Medical personnel accompanied Mims as he left the field, and he threw his helmet down in frustration before sitting near the Broncos’ bench. He eventually entered the team’s medical tent before heading to the locker room.
The injury created another concern for Mims after he previously missed time this summer with a separate lower-body issue. He did not appear in Denver’s first two preseason games, leading the Broncos to give him snaps Friday despite holding several other key players out of the finale.
Payton’s update, however, suggests Mims avoided an injury that could threaten his availability for the beginning of the regular season.
Denver will now turn its attention toward Week 1 and its AFC West matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Sept. 14, at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC.
