North Carolina’s halftime lead over TCU snaps embarrassing Bill Belichick streak

The North Carolina Tar Heels ended the first half of their Week 0 matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs with a narrow 12-10 lead. It just so happens that UNC’s lead managed to snap a rather embarrassing streak in the Bill Belichick era.

The 12-10 lead over TCU on Saturday marks the first time North Carolina has held a halftime lead over a Power Conference opponent with Belichick as head coach, according to Bleacher Report CFB. That means the Tar Heels never once held a lead going into halftime during the 74-year-old’s first year with the program.

“North Carolina’s first halftime lead vs a Power Conference opponent under Bill Belichick,” Bleacher Report posted. “Can the Tar Heels hold on in Ireland?”

Perhaps it’s a sign of good things to come for Belichick and the Tar Heels. His first year as head coach was a bit of a disaster, as the program ended the 2024-25 campaign with a 4-8 record. But changes were made to the coaching staff this offseason, as Belichick hired longtime coach Bobby Petrino to step in as the new offensive coordinator.

The first half against TCU on Saturday was close. North Carolina’s offense looked a bit more productive under Petrino, as the Tar Heels ended the first two quarters with 197 total yards (152 passing, 45 rushing). Meanwhile, the defense allowed 160 total yards, but limited the Horned Frogs to just 80 passing yards.
