Red Sox’s Chad Tracy reveals Roman Anthony’s role once he returns from injury

As the Boston Red Sox are currently in a series with the New York Yankees, the team faces some interesting decisions about the return of key players soon. While the Red Sox expect Roman Anthony to return from injury, interim manager Chad Tracy has spoken about the 22-year-old’s role when he comes back.

According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, Boston is willing to use Anthony in the lead-off spot against right-handed pitchers when he returns. As for left-handed pitchers, that’s labeled as “TBD,” as the team uses Jahmai Jones for that aspect.

“Chad Tracy said he is leaning towards Roman Anthony leading off against righties as soon as he comes back. TBD against lefties the way Jahmai Jones is going,” Browne wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Anthony hasn’t played for the club since May 4 as he dealt with a “partially torn tendon in right ring finger,” via MLB.com, as he’s only recorded a .229 batting average to go along with one home run and five RBIs in 30 games and 109 at-bats.

The Red Sox’s outfielder in Anthony, along with Trevor Story, are currently with Triple-A Worcester on rehab assignments. With them playing on Saturday for the minor league team, the earliest the two could be activated is Sunday vs. the Yankees, per MLB.com.

“Like we’ve been doing, we’ll check in with them [Saturday] after playing and see where they’re at physically and how they feel after that and re-assess,” said Tracy. “I think a lot of people have the perception that maybe we circled a date on the calendar. But when you’re out for three and a half months, it’s difficult to circle a date on the calendar.

“It’s more about just continuing to walk through not only physically how they feel, but walk through like reps, timing all those things. So we’ll keep talking to them and figure it out. Sunday’s possible, but we’ll see how they feel after Saturday.”

It remains to be seen if Anthony will make his return on Sunday, but either way, it appears to be imminent.
