What Edmundo Sosa said about clutch 9th inning grand slam vs. Angels

The Philadelphia Phillies need every win they can get. As a result, they are salivating over a big 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

The catalyst was when left fielder Edmundo Sosa hit a 9th-inning grand slam. After the game, Sosa spoke of the moment, per Paul Casella of MLB.com. Sosa set the stage for what was about to happen.

At first, second baseman Bryson Stott could have been the hero in the 9th inning. It looks as though he was going to hit the three-run homer, but Angels right fielder Wade Meckler made a spectacular catch.

Thus, Sosa took it upon himself to step up to the plate even when the momentum shifted in that direction.

“Stott gets robbed on that tremendous play — a big league play — and the energy went on their side at that moment,” Sosa said via interpreter Diego D’Aniello. “The whole stadium was euphoric. But I think I just stayed calm and focused, and I parked myself next to Don right after that, and just trusted that maybe the opportunity was coming for me.”

Then, Sosa delivered in a big way.

The Phillies are now 75-60 and are trailing the Atlanta Braves by five games in the National League East. Meanwhile, the Phillies are in a fiercely tight battle with the Chicago Cubs for the National League Wild Card.

Sosa is batting .235 with 46 hits, 6 home runs, and 39 RBIs. The series against the Angels runs into Sunday. After that, Philadelphia will head to Arizona to play the Diamondbacks in a three-game series.
