Hull set to instantly transfer starting player to Championship club after Coventry clash

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic has urged the club not to send Ryan Giles out on loan to Burnley.

talkSPORT understands an agreement is in place for the defender to join the Championship club.

The 26-year-old was named in the Tigers‘ starting XI for their Premier League away clash at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday.

He played the full 90 minutes in their 1-0 win with Liam Miller scoring the only goal of the game.

This was Giles’ second consecutive start in the Premier League, having also starred in his side’s 2-0 opening win over Manchester United.

However, just as the 26-year-old has begun to get a taste of life in the top-flight, he could now be preparing to bid a swift farewell to it.

Quick turnaround

With the score at 0-0 after 20 minutes of Hull’s clash with Coventry, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, revealed on air that Giles was set for a quick turnaround after the full-time whistle.

He disclosed that a deal is in place for the left-back to move to Burnley, meaning this could be his last game for the Tigers and certainly will be this season.

With Giles in the final year of his Hull contract and his future up in the air, Crook highlighted just how unsettling this would be for him.

He said on talkSPORT: “My understanding is that Hull have actually agreed a deal with Burnley to send Ryan Giles there on loan after this game.

“Obviously they could still pull the plug on that, but where will his head be at?

“He was Man of the Match against Manchester United last weekend as they returned to the Premier League in style.

“He’s starting here, he must be a little confused that they’re willing to cash in.”

Crook was joined by ex-Chelsea defender Scott Minto on air, who hailed Giles for his professionalism and focusing solely on the task in hand.

Minto chimed in: ”I think you’re relying on an absolute top professional, and to be fair to him, that’s exactly what he is.”

Should Giles end up completing a move to Burnley, it could spell the end of his two-and-a-half-year stay at Hull.

Speaking to talkSPORT directly after the game, Jakirovic said: “I will just say on this idea, no. Just this. No and that’s it. We finish this.

“Because our first XI players cannot go on loan to Burnley. This for me is ridiculous.”

The Englishman joined the Tigers initially on loan from Luton in January 2024, and became an ever-present in the second half of their Championship season.

He then made the permanent switch to Yorkshire in the summer, and has featured heavily over their last two seasons in the second tier.

Overall, Giles has made 73 appearances for Hull in all competitions and has chipped in with nine assists, eight of which came in their promotion-winning campaign last term.

The Wolves academy graduate started in the Championship Play-Off Final victory over Middlesbrough in May.

Since then, Giles has played a key role in Hull’s winning return to the Premier League, scooping the Player of the Match award in a memorable 2-0 home win over Man United last week.

And he could now be set to bring his promotion-winning expertise to a new side, as Burnley target an immediate top-flight return.

Giles is under contract at the MKM Stadium until the summer of 2027, although Hull hold an option of extend his stay by a further 12 months on top of that.
