Yankees’ Aaron Boone makes Elmer Rodriguez announcement during Red Sox series

The New York Yankees hope to hold off the Boston Red Sox in the American League East division standings this weekend. Yankees manager Aaron Boone is making a big announcement, as that series continues. Boone is keeping Elmer Rodriguez on the team’s starting rotation.

“Elmer Rodriguez will stick in the rotation for at least one more turn to start Monday against the Angels, Aaron Boone said,” ESPN reported on X, formerly Twitter.

This season, Rodriguez has a 4.70 ERA in five starts. He has struggled this season, as the pitcher hasn’t posted a win. He also has a 1.52 WHIP.

Rodriguez is coming off a strong start, though, which is likely the reason he is sticking around. The Yankees pitcher allowed just three hits over six innings of work, in a New York win over the Houston Astros.

“It was just trusting myself,” Rodríguez said, per MLB.com. “It’s something that I’ve been building up since my first couple of starts, and so each time I’ve felt better. I’ve been working on some stuff down there [in the Minors], and I feel like it’s been working so far.”

New York’s coaches have trust in Rodriguez. They are looking for him to improve moving forward.

“It seems like when he has struggled up here,” Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said, “he’s just kind of flirting with the strike zone more than living in it. For him to be successful at this level, it’s not giving the hitters too much credit.”

The Yankees are hoping to get their rotation fully healthy, as the season starts to wind down. New York is currently second in the AL East, with a 76-58 record.

The Yankees host a doubleheader against the Red Sox on Saturday. New York has seven wins in their last 10 games.
