Chiefs release linebacker who successfully sued NCAA for eligibility

Wesley Bissainthe enjoyed a fairly satisfying ending to his college career, as he helped Miami upset Ohio State and advance to the national championship for the first time in 24 years. Though, in this day and age, one writes their final chapter in pencil, not pen. Sensing that his NFL opportunities could be slim for 2026, the Third-Team All-ACC selection sought a fifth year of NCAA eligibility. He received a temporary restraining order from a Texas judge on Friday, and the Kansas City Chiefs are making his decision quite easy on Saturday.

KC is releasing the undrafted rookie linebacker, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The likelihood of Bissainthe going back to school just spiked. Unless another NFL team wishes to give him a shot, he will probably try to sharpen his skills and expand his bank account in college.

Fans may not like it, but this move is perfectly understandable given what has recently been put into action. The NCAA changed its eligibility requirements in June, allowing all of its athletes to play five seasons over the course of a five-year span. But it forbid outgoing seniors from receiving the same privilege, which, naturally, has unleashed a deluge of lawsuits. Bissainthe is one of 100-plus people to formally dispute the ruling.

Perhaps a Miami reunion is imminent. He did grow up there, after all. The 22-year-old totaled five sacks, two interceptions, 121 solo tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss in 54 games for the Hurricanes. Wesley Bissainthe will presumably look to boost those career numbers.

One thing is clear, he will not play for the Chiefs to begin the 2026 NFL campaign.
