Moses Itauma health update issued by Frank Warren as star rushed to hospital on stretcher

Moses Itauma has been taken to hospital after medics carried him from the ring after his loss to Filip Hrgovic.

Itauma was looking to brush shoulders with Mike Tyson and make history as he walked out to a roaring British crowd in London’s O2 Arena.

He came up against Croatian giant Hrgovic who came to spoil the party and capture the IBF world heavyweight title that was up for grabs.

And despite dominating large parts of the fight, Itauma ran out of energy and was stopped in worrying scenes in the ninth round.

The pair were trading blows and the towel came in from trainer Ben Davison, which saw the referee wave off the contest.

Itauma was left in a crumpled heap in the corner, and while ‘El Animal’ celebrated his gruelling win, the Chatham southpaw received medical attention.

He was seen being carried from a stretcher by medics, who carried him from the ring and out of the arena.

And Itauma has since been taken to hospital to receive further examination and medical treatment.

Warren issues Itauma health update

His promoter Frank Warren then suggested after the contest that a leg injury was one of the reasons for the medical attention.

He told talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver: “Moses has gone to hospital. He has done something to his leg.

“He did something to his leg and he was exhausted, is the truth of it. It was a very fast-paced fight.”

For Itauma, the immediate priority will be diagnosing any injuries, and ensuring his health is restored.

Of course he now faces a rebuild after his path to heavyweight domination was derailed.

But at 21-years-old, the future still can be bright and he will be keen to use the experience as a learning curve.

Warren reacts to Itauma vs Hrgovic

For Itauma, it was a devastating blow, having yet to have any calibre of opposition truly test him.

But after such a dominant start, the latter stages proved to be one step too far for the young star, who came ever so close to world glory.

Warren continued to talkSPORT: “He got caught and the fighting instinct was to stand there and let his shots go.

“That’s what it is at the top level. You have to tick all the boxes.

“He has got to learn from the fight and will hopefully do that.”

As for Hrgovic, he already knows his fate.

The Croatian had already been contractually mandated to make a first defence against Frank Sanchez.

He had faced off with WBC champion Agit Kabayel after the victory, but Warren revealed that fight will be on ice for now.

The Queensberry kingpin added: “Not at the moment he can’t fight Kabayel.

“He has an obligation to fight Frank Sanchez as he stepped aside, so we will see what happens there.

“We will see if we can do something with Frank to make the unification in terms of step-aside.”
